Choosing Your First Guitar

What follows is the result of comprehensive research and documentation. This article has been created after the study of many resources.

Hair bands and MTV Unplugged seem to be responsible for the endless choices when trying to purchase a guitar. Back in the days of Johnny Cash and Elvis, there weren't as many choices. Now, there are guitars everywhere, and they are every shape, size, weight, and price. It could be more overwhelming to choose which guitar to start with than to actually sit down and learn how to play.

The bottom line when trying to invest in a guitar is to do the research. There are many different instruments to choose from, but they all have different personalities that they are meant for. You can easily do your research online, but beware that when you go to a manufacturer's website, they are going to hold a bias to their products. However, if you go online and research what other people are saying about their guitars, you will have a better chance of finding what you want, and what guitar will fit your needs.

The price of the guitar is also important. You do not want to buy a cheap instrument because it will not produce a quality sound. If shopping online for your guitar, be careful about the product that you are buying. Do your own research instead of going by posted opinions about the product. Opinions can sometimes be faulty or misleading. Rather than wasting your time online with products that you cannot see or test, it is better to just go to a nearby guitar store so you can get a better idea about what you are buying.

If you seek some guidance from someone at a music store, you will receive a couple of benefits. One, you will get the benefit of talking to someone face to face. Often times, you will be able to be able to tell if someone is lying to you, or trying to manipulate you into paying more for your guitar. Also, you get the benefit of being able to negotiate with someone when you are not operating online. You can perform the walk out that is popular in car dealerships across the country, and your chances of receiving a deal will increase by a factor of ten.

If after pulling out the yellow pages, checking the Internet, and talking to all the salespeople in your area, you are still having issues with trying to decide what to get, try a message board. There is a message board called FretBoard, a site where guitarists go to vent, praise, and talk about everything pertaining to guitars. There is a higher chance that you will get your questions answered honestly by another guitarist then by someone who is trying to improve their bottom line.

Before your make a large purchase like a guitar, you should always do research. Do not rely on other peoples' opinions, but ask around to see what brands and models others suggest. Salespeople at your local guitar center can help you with your decision, but be careful so they don't talk you into buying something that you are not comfortable with. As with any instrument, make sure that the guitar you decide on is something that you feel right with and one that will last for many years. If you plan on sticking with it, a guitar can be a great investment for your financial future.

Today's Tip On Guitar

Proper maintenance is important to any technical piece of equipment, all the way from vehicles down to instruments that you play. The guitar is no exception. One of the things that you must do on a regular basis is to tune the strings on your guitar. Without doing this, they can stretch and the sound will be distorted. Tuning your guitar every so often will help prevent you from looking like an idiot in front of your friends whenever you are trying to impress them with your musical skills.
